Making History & Celebrating Victories!

This month I am celebrating several personal and collective victories in regards to my photography and racial justice work. Three events are taking place in Savannah, Washington D.C., and New York City. You are invited!

Savannah, Georgia
February 10, 2024 (11 am - 2 pm & 6 pm -7 pm)

The official marker unveiling of the newly named Taylor Square (formerly Calhoun Square) will take place in the square. Susie King Taylor is known for being the first African-American nurse to serve during the American Civil War and the first Black woman to self-publish her memoirs.

As you may know, in 2020 I researched the unmarked African Burying Ground in Savannah, Georgia. I founded and launched the Rest With Honor Savannah petition to remove John C. Calhoun's name (pro-slavery politician, Confederate icon) from Calhoun Square, located on top of the burial ground, and I petitioned the City of Savannah to rename the site. In 2023 Calhoun's name was officially removed from the sacred space.

Washington D.C.
February 15, 2024 (5:30 pm)

The Sound She Saw film by Crystal Whaley will be screened at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian. The documentary film examines the presence and impact of Black female photographers. I am honored to be a featured photographer.

New York City
February 17, 2024 (2 pm-4 pm)

I will be participating in the Artist Talk for the Long Journey Forward, Black Men In Passage exhibition. Three of my portraits from West Africa are featured in the exhibition. Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba. 219 East 2nd Street NY, NY 10009.
